Finland – Winter Solstice
Today is the shortest day of the year and the darkest as well! Everyone always told us how november was a horrible month because of the darkness and that only after december things would start to get better!
With my craziness, I was already imagining totally dark days and that I wouldn’t see any light for the next months. It was kind of scary you know haha but to say the truth, it is not exactly like that. We really have shorter days, usually the sun does not come out and sometimes, its so gray out there that the day doesn’t ‘rise’!
Recorded by noon of a gray winter day!
People say that there is the finish mood and it depends if it’s sunny or not out there! And I think is very true, because with the busy schedule from the university, my husband wouldn’t see the day out there. He left the house, it was dark, he left the university, it was dark! Let’s say that he had finish moody days for a few days hahaha and there was the tiredness from the end of the semester as well! But, with good conversations and good nights of sleep, everything got back to normal!
On the other hand, in these last two months we also had beautiful days, with a weak winter sun but that was there to cheer us up! I guess I did not really feel this mood variation even suffering with the darkness because come on .. my alarm clock usually rings between 8am and 9am and it’s still night out there! So how do you get up? But anyway, it was kinda of better for me because I usually take the dog for a walk around noon, so even if the day is gray or sunny, I still walk a lot, run, contemplate the nature and forget that I have only 3h of light ahead! It renews the energies of the day you know!
Recorded by noon of a sunny winter day!
For now on it will still remain dark, but things will start to get better! Today it dawned at 9:24 am and the forecast is to be dark by 3:13pm! From what I found on the internet, it will be 5 hours 49 minutes and 4 seconds of ‘light’ here! I really cling to the seconds haha but from tomorrow on we will gain almost a minute per day!
For those who have never lived without sun, I think our first experience was not that bad! Of course we take our dose of vitamin D every single day and we force ourselves to leave the house even with the laziness that beats! You can’t stay home if it would be a rainy Sunday. Like that pj’s kinda of day? No no, if we did that it would be two months like that! And yeah, I think we’d already be depressed with a very horrible mood hahaha maybe even worse than the Finnish one!
Having a ray of sunshine really changes life! Now I can understand what they were saying of how things can get a sad! We have all the sun we want in Brazil and don’t realize how we need it until we don’t have it! We never even need to supplement the vitamin there! But here everything has changed! It is not nice to open all the windows and still have to turn on the lights! But come on folks, it’s only for a few months and soon everything will turn around and we’ll have more sun that we used to have back in Brazil haha we’ll want the darkness back because it’s going to be midnight and we will be suffering to sleep! Okay, it’s all or nothing, but that’s what we have for today, right?
So let’s get dressed and hit the road because breathing fresh air will also make life way much better!
