Swedish as an Official Languange
Do you know that besides Finnish, Swedish is also an official language? Before Finland became part of the Russian Empire in 1809, they were part of Sweden. When the Russians arrived, they kept the Swedish, even the Finnish language already existed. After their independence in 1917, there was a national movement to make Finnish official. However, the government decided that both would have the same status. The only place in Finland where it’s not official is the Åland Island. Today, only 5% of the population in the entire country speak Swedish as their first language.
