Movie Tip – A United Kingdom
I’ve watched a fantastic movie called A United Kingdom and wanted to share about it with you today. It is a British biographical drama, based on the true love story of Sir Seretse Khama and Ruth Williams. It was screened at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival last September and was the opening film at the 60th London Film Festival.
Produced by Amma Asante, it happens after World War II, when Botswana was a British protectorate, known as Bechuanaland. Seretse – starring David Oyelowo – the chief-in-waiting for the throne was studding law in London when he met Ruth – starring Rosamund Pike – and got married. Both families did not agreed with the marriage, neither did the British government. They were concerned of the relations in between South Africa and all the southern region, as it was an apartheid-era and he couldn’t have a white queen.
He moves to Bechauanaland with his new wife and faces all the problems of their decision. When travelling to Britain to negotiate his throne, he gets exiled been unable to travel back. After managing to negotiate his freedom with the council, he returns to his tribe and is accepted as chief. Despite all the trouble, Ruth and Seretse never gave up of each other. He was elected the first president of Bostwana and his wife was accepted as one of them.
I do recommend you to watch it as I really got inspired by this couple that fought not only for their love, but for the equality of people, regardless of been black or white. Moreover, fought for the benefits of their people while they where been explored.
