Natural Food for Dogs – Have you heard of it?
Those who have a pet may have already heard about it, but for some people, this is might be totally new: Natural Food for Dogs! I have two dogs and I chose to feed them with natural food only. Today I will share some details that I consider important about this choice, as it alters the dog’s diet and it’s daily routine!
We could define “Natural Food for Dogs” as been composed of… well.. natural food (lol), or in other words, food that we humans consume. It is the same food we buy for ourselves in the supermarket, not the dog food that we buy in pet stores. Simple as that! One important detail: natural food doesn’t mean “feeding the dog with leftovers”!
The first and most important point about this diet:
Talk to your vet before feeding your dogs with natural food!
It is extremely important to understand the process and how it works: what ingredients you can use, which ones can be toxic, how to balance the ingredients, and much more. Don’t change your dog’s diet by your own, it can be very risky!
The ingredients used for dogs are found in any supermarket: vegetables, meat, carbs (potato, rice, etc.) and that’s basically it. It can be quite practical, as you shop for yourself and for your pet at the same time and same store!
Preparing the food is also very simple: no spices, no seasoning, no salt, no nothing! It is basically water or steam, simple as that! Some diets are even composed of raw food, so that can be even easier to prepare! But remember: it is the vet, not you, who will choose if your dog will have the cooked or raw diet.
Even though it is easy to prepare, I have to admit that it requires some time to let everything ready to consume, as it includes cleaning, cutting, weighting, etc. In order to save some time and make things more practical, you can cook for longer periods and freeze the portions. At home, for instance, we prepare enough food for one week. Then we freeze everything and unfreeze the daily portions.
A frequent and awkward question that I’m often asked is about my dogs poop with this diet. Honestly, I noticed that they poop much less with natural food than when they eat dog food. Also, the smell is less intense (if I can put it that way…lol).
For those who are not willing to give up on dog food, but sympathize with the idea of natural food, at least the treats can be changed. Substitute the industrialized options for fruits and vegetables. Try giving your dog a piece of carrot or celery to see what I mean. They absolutely love it!
A downside of feeding your dog this way is that some people will not accept it. Be prepared for being criticized! Sometimes it may cause some polemic too! At least here in Brazil, where I live, it is very common to hear things like “People are starving on the streets and instead of buying food for them you feed your animals with it (!)”. Or even, “You probably don’t have much to do in your life to spend your time cooking for your dog”. Fortunately, it is not often that it happens, but I thought it would be important to mention.
I had a dog that was fed only with dog food, and now my two dogs eat only natural food. I don’t judge one diet better than the other, they are just different and each has its pros and cons. For instance, when I travel I end up leaving a package of dog food for my dogs, because I know it is easier for the person who is staying with them.
I believe the best diet is that one that makes the owner feel confident about it and that offers the all the nutrients for the pet to be healthy. Today I chose natural food for my dogs and I am very happy with this choice.
How do you feed your pets? Have you tried natural food too?
