Sustainable Living – 5 Different Ways to Clean with Baking Soda
When it comes to baking soda there are many different ways in using this ingredient! It is more commonly found in the kitchen, but in this post I will share different sustainable living ways of using it as a cleaning product and personal hygiene item through simple combinations.
One of the advantages of making homemade products is that we end up knowing exactly what we are using and what will be in contact with us at home latter on. When it comes to cleaning it can be a big thing, or am I the only one who doesn’t recognize the majority of the itens listed on the labels? Besides that, as I have pets at home, I am always concerned about what they might be in contact with. I don’t want my dogs eventually licking heavy chemical stuff!
Another positive point of homemade cleaning products is that you can save a lot of money, as most recipes combine simple ingredients that people usually have at home. This prevents you from spending money with tons of different products.
I am going to share 05 recipes with you that I have already tested before. They all have a common ingredient: baking soda (or sodium bicarbonate, the scientific name).
Ready? Let’s go!
Recipe #1 – All Purpose Cleansing Product
- ¼ cup of baking soda;
- 2 liters of water;
- ½ cup of white vinegar
Mix well all the ingredients and use them on general cleaning: on the floor, furniture and/or surfaces. You may use it in full immersion (e.g. bucket + cloth) or with a cleaning spray.
You may prepare only the amount you will use or you can save some in a spray bottle, so you can have it always available when needed. One tip here: if you use the spray bottle you can put one or two small pieces of clove inside the mixture to give it a special smell!
The main point in this recipe is that the vinegar acts as a disinfectant and grease removal and the sodium bicarbonate removes the stains. A full and complete cleaning recipe, isn’t it? Free of toxic chemicals or unknown ingredients!
Recipe #2 – Laundry Stain Remover
- Baking Soda
Make a moist mixture with a little bit of baking soda and water. Put this mixture over the stain you want to remove and leave it for approximately 30 minutes. Then proceed with your laundry as usual.
Baking soda is excellent when it comes to removing even the most difficult stains! I discovered it when I had to remove a wine stain from my husband’s shirt. I found it so easy to removed it that I started to use this technique all the time.
Thus, this experience made me find out the advantage of always having this ingredient in my laundry , which leads us to the next recipe.
Recipe #3 – Laundry Powder
Measure: 1 tablespoon of baking soda per 1 liter of water
Mix the baking soda with the washing powder of your preference and proceed with laundry as usual. Besides of the fact that it is excellent with stains, it also removes eventual bad smell of the clothes and protects the cloth. For white clothes it is also good, as it removes the yellowish aspect they might have.
Another advantage is that it higienizes your laundry machine and, consequently it prevents the flow of unknown chemicals in the environment. Not to mention the financial part of it, as it is a lot cheaper to buy baking soda than any other stain removers. Waive your blemish goodbye (if you havn’t done it yet!).
Recipe #4 – Silver Cleaning Product
- Baking soda
- Warm water
Mix both ingredients until you get a moist mixture. With the help of a clean cloth proceed to clean your silver stuff. Once you have finished, remove the excess of the moisture and it is done! Simple, practical and efficient! You will also save room in your shelves as you will not need to keep a specific product for this.
Recipe #5 – Natural Deodorant (Vegan)
This is not a cleaning product recipe, but I thought it was worth sharing it too. This is another simple recipe and the ingredients are:
- 8 tablespoons of coconut oil;
- 4 teaspoons of baking soda;
- 2 drops of essential oil of your preference (optional)
Mix well the coconut oil and the baking soda. If you like, you can put 2 drops of any essential oil that you like (lavender, vanilla, etc) in this mixture to give it a special fragrance. Once you finished mixing all the ingredients, put it in a glass container for storage and voilá, it is ready! Use it in your underarms as a regular deodorant.
This natural deodorant helps you avoid the contact with the heavy chemicals and metals that industrialized deodorants have. Besides that, baking soda is excellent for whitening, so it will make your underarms clear and free of eventual stains.
Baking soda is very versatile!
As mentioned in the beginning of this post, I know that there are many other ways of using it. However, I feel more confident in sharing only the ones I have tested previously. I also strongly suggest that you test the recipes before using them in larger scale at home.
I hope you like these tips and if you do use them let me know how your experience was!
