Why Vitamin D?
While living in Brazil, I didn’t remembered that vitamin D existed! It was something so natural in our daily life! We had a beautiful sunshine every day – and for almost all year long – that when we arrived, one of the first things people would tell us, was about the vitamin!
I confess that I didn’t buy it straight away. Even though, it was something that I had already been on my list of vitamins since I was in Brazil. We still had a beautiful summer outside when we got here and even it seemed like our Brazilian winter, there was lot’s of light! So we didn’t really cared until the days began to turn gray.
That’s when we started to worry about it and remembered of what everyone kept telling us (that it wasn’t good to not take it)! Since then, it has been part of my morning routine! I take my drops every morning and eat a nut straight after!
Vitamin D is essential for physical and mental health. It increases the absorption of calcium and phosphorus in the gut, strengthening bones and teeth; and prevents diseases such as obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, multiple sclerosis and cancer. There is also an association of vitamin with mental illnesses like schizophrenia and depression.
Because it is a fat-soluble vitamin, the nuts fat helps our body to absorb the vitamin. I eat any kind of nut. We always have a mix of them and I still add sunflower seed and raisins in a pot. Every morning, I choose one of them and I eat it!
It’s funny to realize how something so important to our body can be so easily forgotten when we don’t miss it. Although I do not believe it gets scarce of our bodies too quickly, we’ll better avoid it, right? After this dark winter, I still don’t know when (or if I should) stop taking it! The sun up here is not exactly the most intense to really provide everything we need. But when summer arrives, that’s when I’ll be able to analyze better if I can give myself a few months off!
Both in the market and in pharmacies, there are several options. As my instructions were in droplets, I looked up for the liquid ones. To my surprise, I only found it in one brand so far. Most are in capsule, some are poly vitamins, some have Omega 3 and so on! You’ll find it for every taste!

In Brazil, I was recommended two brands: B.Well and DePura! Not sure if they exist in other places, but they are sold in conventional pharmacies there! The one I found and I’m taking here is called Sana-Sol D3 Tipat. I was glad that as I’m going to have to take it for several months or even all year round, it’s way cheaper than in Brazil! I find it in the pharmacies and mostly at the supermarkets for approximately €5 the 10ml bottle.
If you want to know if you have lack of vitamin D or any other in your body, you can always ask your doctor for a blood test! Just to remember that I did not start taking it on my own! Scarcity is dangerous, but the overdose is as well. So always ask your doctor before taking any kind of medication or vitamin!
It’s unbelievable how I’ve started appreciating more the sun in only a few months! Not only because of the vitamin, but because of the energy and life it brings to our day! If you are down in the southern part of the world you might be willing for the cold to arrive! And I get you, I hate when it’s too hot too! In Brazil, summer got up to the 40º! That’s too much, I know!
But for us up here in the northern side, we are jumping for joy that the sun is back and I hope he stays for many months!
